Foam and air mattress features
Foam and air mattresses are considered portable although they may be put into full-time service. When not in use, keep in the travel or storage bag provided. These mattresses are offered in a full range of sizes from twin to queen and use standard bed sheets.
Removable covers for easy cleaning are also available for single layer foam and air mattresses.
Most models come with a puncture repair kit. Purchase one separately if not provided.
Many sets include a pump. Pumps may be built-in and run on 120v while others are battery powered. External manual, battery powered and electric pumps are available separately.
Inflation time may range from 1 to 15 minutes depending on pump model. In general air mattresses inflate more quickly than they deflate, which may be a consideration when traveling. Check valve descriptions for more detailed information.
Foam and air mattress construction
Foam and air mattresses have come a long way from the multi-chambered vinyl foundation for the sleeping bag or float for pool use. Foam and mattresses now come in a full range of sizes from twin to queen. Double check dimensions, as some variance exists.
Single mattresses lay directly on the floor. Choose a raised height mattress if rising from and lowering to the mattress is an issue.
Some air mattress models have built-in contours to simulate pillows. Surface materials differ among manufacturers.
Foam tops provide more comfort and create a more traditional bed feel. The range in foam tops spans from traditional single layer foam to high tech memory foam. Many foam and air mattresses feature waterproof covers.
Sidewall construction should be sturdy enough to withstand pressure with use.
Foam and air mattress care and safety
Non-porous surfaces can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap. Dry thoroughly before replacing bedding. See manufacturer's instructions for porous coverings and complete cleaning information.
Prevent punctures by inspecting use area before inflating. Keep sharp objects away from mattress area.
Discourage jumping on mattress, which may cause excessive pressure and burst seams.
Check weight rating to ensure suitability for your specific use.
Always keep a patch on hand, especially when traveling.
If the mattress pump is battery powered, carry extra batteries.
Deflate when not in use to prevent damage.
