Fabrics such as linen, wool and silk suffer for a number of reasons when introduced to water. These fabrics often soak up water and expand to a much greater degree than cotton because of chemical bonding that happens between the hydrogen in the water and the molecules that make up the fabric. Certain blends of these different fibers are also physically altered with the introduction of water.

The effects that result cannot only shrink the fabric it may result in a number of negative effects. Garments of this type are often left misshapen and weakened. This is because the fibers swell to well over their intended size, which breaks down the structural integrity of the garment and can often cause it to fall apart.

Home Dry Cleaning Methods
Commercial dry cleaners use solvents that do not distort the fibers of wool, silk and linen the way water does. These solvents do not bond on a molecular level with these fabrics. While home dry cleaning products do not use solvents there are a number of similarities, they involve pre-treating of stains, there is the application of heat in the cleaning process and then the garment must be reshaped. Keeping these steps in mind let's look at home dry cleaning procedures.

1. You must first pre-treat a stain with the at home dry cleaning kits stain remover. Ironically, these stain removers are often water based. The stain removers allow water to penetrate the fabric and remove the stain. Since a minimal amount of water is used it does not damage the fibers.

2. Place the stain removers applicator on the stain. On the other side of the fabric you will place the home dry cleaning kits absorbent stain pad.

3. With a light touch gently work the solution into the fabric.

4. The solution's detergents dissolve soil and grease.

5. The dirt is removed from the fabric by applying pressure.

6. The stain pad absorbs the dirt and the water used to clean it.

7. After you have patted the garment dry, put the garments into the mesh bag with the dryer activated cleaning pad. The cleaning pad has a small amount of water within it as well. Enough water to release stains but not enough to harm fabrics.

The trace amounts of water in these kits allow you to clean soiled garments with the home dry-cleaning kit without the using large amounts of harmful solvents. There are other kits available that include leather cleaners and at home dry cleaning carpet kits.
