Waste Basket Cleaning And Maintenance

What Is That Smell?

Quit looking at that waste basket with the kind of dread usually reserved for violent conflict. While it may look like a thankless and disgusting task it can be quick, easy and, as such, quite rewarding. The sanitary implications cannot be overstated.

1. The first thing you want to do is take the waste basket outside (if this is not possible then use your sink's sprayer instead.)

2. You will need a good disinfectant cleaner or bleach. Using a scented bleach can be good but is not necessary.

3. Pour enough of the disinfectant into the waste basket to cover the bottom.

4. Spray down the sides of the waste basket. (If you are using your kitchen sink's sprayer you can use hot water.)

5. Then using a broom or a deck scrubber, cleanse the side of the waste basket occasionally dipping the broom into the water at the bottom of the container.

6. Rinse off the broom or the deck scrubber making sure that the bristles are free of any detritus.

7. Pour the contents of the waste basket down the drain.

8. Repeat steps three through seven.

This is a great solution for a number of reasons. The first is that you get a very thorough cleaning of the waste basket without having to put your hands into the bacteria-laden muck that is held within. You also get a clean and disinfected broom as well.

Steps To Prevent A Putrid Waste Basket

There are a few things you can do to prevent bacterial growth in a waste basket.

One of the most effective is making sure that liquids are drained from containers before being placed in the waste basket.

Another is to pour a small amount of baking soda into the bottom of the waste basket after cleaning. This will absorb any stray odors.

You may also want to pour some of the disinfectant into the waste basket liner as well.

Another preventative measure is to put any food scraps to be thrown out directly into you outdoor waste basket.

Performing these simple acts will ensure that bacteria are killed off and odors are kept under control.
