Beds

Before the invention of the mattress, most beds were bags stuffed with feathers, cotton, horse hair, or other natural fibers and substances. One of the largest breakthroughs in the evolution of beds occurred when they were first lifted off of the ground. Prior to that, people were directly exposed to all kinds of germs, insects, and rodents.

The ancient Romans and Egyptians used beds for much more than sleeping: the bed was also a place to eat, socialize, and entertain guests. Today, beds are primarily used for sleeping, relaxing, or reading in private.

In terms of design, there are more styles of beds today than ever before. Bunk beds, daybeds, futons, Murphy beds, trundle beds, platform beds and air beds are just a few styles that can be found in furniture stores.
