A little bedside manner
For many of us, the bedroom is where we will spend the majority of our time in the home resting and preparing for the next day. Because of that, comfort is the most important feature in any bedroom. Correspondingly, the furniture your bedroom has is critical in determining the overall comfort you will enjoy while there.
Styles of nightstands
Nightstands are a secondary piece of furniture and are used to complement a room rather than define it. In large to medium sized rooms, two nightstands can be used to add a sense of symmetry while only one may comfortably fit in a small room. Either way, your nightstand should provide for space, comfort, and organization in your bedroom.
Determining which nightstand is right for you has a lot to do with the style you're trying to achieve in the room. Nightstands are fashioned out of nearly every material – from a mahogany cane nightstand to a white wicker nightstand – and can found in most price ranges. In addition, many other styles of nightstands have been in vogue over the years and are still available now:
Craftsman style
Le Nouvel
Monterey styled
Corbin
Savannah, San Marion, and Florence
Shaker and Quaker
Various wood and metal
In addition to the styles above, nightstands and bed side tables are also available in a variety of styles specifically for children's rooms. These tables may have lamps built into the top and feature cartoon characters and are often painted in bolder colors and tones. When looking for nightstands for a child's room, look for safer nightstands. Avoid sharp corners and stands that have legs more than 4 inches long.
Functional nightstands
While adding to the overall style of your bedroom, the most important feature of a nightstand is its functionality. A nightstand should be easily accessible and usually contains up to three drawers for keeping personal belongings. The top of a nightstand is also important as it is typically used for alarm clocks and bed side lamps.
Whatever nightstand you choose, make sure you get one that will add to the overall comfort of your bedroom. The height of the table should match, or be close to, that of your bed.
