Cleaning Wood Hope Chests

Clean it without ruining it

Cleaning

There are a number of steps to take when cleaning wood hope chests. You first want to remove older wax buildup. Then you should give the chest a thorough cleansing. Then you should touch up scratches and areas of discoloration.

Wax removal can be done with either paint thinner or a brand name wax remover or stripper. You should apply the thinner or stripper first to a small inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn't affect the underlying finish. Once you are satisfied with how the process will affect the piece then proceed to apply with 00000 steel wool. Using the steel wool will give enough bite to affect the wax without distressing the underlying finish.

After the wax has been stripped away you will need to clean the residue of the thinner or stripper from the chest. This should be done with a light dish cleanser and water. Apply in small areas so that you can clean the surface without worry of soaking the wood. If the water beads up in any area this means that the wax is still present and must be removed.

When the cleaning has been completed you must give some attention to the chests finish. There are a number of stain pens available that will help you blend any scratches or blemishes before you re-wax the chest.

Waxing

You will want to purchase a carnauba wax that is made specifically for furniture. There are carnauba waxes made for automobiles that have other additives that could harm and discolor your chest's finish.

Begin waxing the chest with a soft cloth and a small amount of wax with the grain of the wood. Wax a panel of the piece and let it dry for a few moments. Use a soft cloth such as an old t-shirt or cheesecloth.

Once the wax hazes over, buff until the chest begins to shine. Proceed around the piece until the entire chest has an even coating of wax.

Occasional buffing will renew the look of the finish achieved after your initial waxing. Be careful not to reapply too much wax lest you create the kind of buildup you have just removed.
