Closet Wire Shelving

Don't be tired, get wired

Where to begin

When installing wire shelving the first thing to consider is what tools you need. Don't worry, you will not need much but what is needed is essential.

You will need a way to cut the shelves. You can use a number of tools besides the old hacksaw to cut down the shelves. Bolt cutters or a circular saw with a steel cutting blade will work as well. If you need to purchase a tool, grab a hacksaw for less than $10.

A drill will also be needed. If you don't own one get a corded drill for around $20. Forget about cordless drills, they have less power and they cost more money.

You will also need an inexpensive torpedo level.

Make sure you have a hammer and a Philips screwdriver on hand as well.

Measuring the closet

It is good to take as many measurements as possible of your closet. Depth, width, and height, but also keep in mind any trim or other irregularities. Next, it is good to sketch out a scale drawing of you closet and bring it with you to the store or at your side on line. This is important because it will allow you to get a mental picture of how you would like to configure your design. This drawing doesn't have to be pretty so don't be deterred if you lack skill-the sketch just helps to make your design tangible. You could also purchase graph paper to help with this process.

Two choices

There are two choices of wire shelving styles. One is the type of shelving that has tracks and is adjustable. The other type of shelving is the free hanging style. I would recommend the track-based shelves for many reasons:

They are stronger because they have multiple anchoring points.

The tracks can also be used to hold multi-drawer and basket units.

Track shelves also allow quick and easy readjustment. This is important as need changes such as in childrens rooms as they grow, as well as seasonal requirements.

Most companies also offer easy and convenient guides for installation. Make sure you use all of these resources that will make it simple and frustration free.
