The term vanity can refer to more than just a dressing table–it is also used in contemporary times to refer to a bathroom sink and cabinet, usually with a mirror mounted above it.
Traditional vanities are often both decadent and delicate pieces of furniture. Primarily used by women, they often feature ornate patterns carved in wood. Vanities could often be found in the bedroom, rather than the bathroom, and many antique vanities still around today make nice additions to bedrooms and large walk-in clothes closets.
Modern bathroom vanities seem to try to mimic the decadence associated with traditional vanities–many are made out of marble, granite, or other high-quality materials. Rather than being built-in, they are often free standing objects. One big difference between modern and traditional vanities is that most modern ones do not include a chair.
