Why Have A Hope Chest

There are a number of reasons one would choose to continue the tradition of keeping a hope chest. Originally, a family would start to assemble a wedding hope chest when a family gave birth to a girl. The primary reason was that before the industrial revolution the items needed in a household often had to be made by that home's inhabitants. Unlike now, things like linens and clothing took quite a bit of time to make and it was easier and more economically feasible that these items be accumulated in the years prior to marriage.

As the years have passed the function of a hope chest has become more profound. Now the hope chest is more of a time capsule and a collection of a womens family heritage. These chests are as much about putting things away as they are about revisiting and sharing memories with others.

It is not incumbent upon a parent to go broke when purchasing a hope chest. Many fine quality chests can be found that will fit a variety of budgets. Keep in mind that the chest is there to preserve memories primarily, so don't let get caught up in spending tons of money.
