Like washing machines, many different types of dryers have been invented and used, although some were more successful than others. Electrical clothes dryers, still used today, first appeared around 1915.

Gas dryers run off of a natural gas, such as propane or butane, rather than electricity. Other types of clothes dryers include condenser dryers, which use a heat pump to extract moisture from the clothes, and spin dryers, which use centrifugal force.

Tumble dryers are still the most popular type of dryer used today. They can be powered by electricity or gas. In a tumble dryer, the drum is rotated slowly in order to create a tumbling effect which dries the clothes.
