The scrub board, considered the first washing "machine," was invented in 1797. In 1908 the first electric-powered washing machine was introduced.

 

With at least 1676 patents issued by the United States Patent Office between 1804 and 1873, the most common invention of the 19th century was the washing machine.

 

The domestic washing machine was first marketed in Chicago, Illinois. This new home appliance was referred to by the name "Thor."
