The first washing machine was in fact the scrub board, which was invented in 1797. Fifty long years went by before a hand powered machine was invented, which resembles washing machines today.
Different types of washing devices were created during the 19th and 20th centuries, and over 2,000 patents were issued. Early versions of the washing machine used pumps and wheels, stomping devices, and other assorted gadgets. Some failed experiments included a machine that washed one piece of clothing at a time.
It wasn't until the 1930s that the washing machine was able to wash, rinse and wring clothes all in a single operation. And in 1947, the first top-load automatic machine was introduced to the public.
Of all the variations of washing devices, only two types are used today: the agitator system and the cylinder system. Want to learn more about the washing machine? Read the informational articles located below.
