SPFs 10, 20, and 30…check. New swimsuit…check. Sunglasses…check. Beach hat…check. Good beach reading…check. That’s everything, right?
Not quite. You may be able pick up a beach towel as an afterthought at the local department store or after you arrive at your seaside destination, but if you don’t give a little thought to it, you may end up with the wrong one. Here are some things to consider:
Nap time
First of all, look at the quality of the nap. Check to see if the towel sheds easily. You’re probably going to spend hours lying on your beach towel, so you don’t want bits of fuzz clinging to your skin when you get up for another daiquiri. The higher the thread count, the less likely your beach towel will be to end up on you instead of you on it.
Color schemes
Before you quickly pick out your favorite color or theme, think about where you’re using it. Some beaches are much hotter than others. Check average temperatures. If the mercury isn’t quite hitting 80 degrees, you may want a dark towel. A breeze off the water when the temperature is in the low eighties can feel a little on brisk side, so a towel that retains heat may be more comfortable.
Conversely, if it’s going to be a scorcher, stick to light colors, which will reflect heat. After scampering over a bed of hot sand on your way back to your towel from the water, a dark fabric won’t provide your feet with that much needed relief.
If you have an umbrella, the color of your beach towel should be safe from the color robbing effects of direct sunlight. If you plan to lounge directly beneath the blazing sun, take into account that your beach towel will fade, so you may want a pastel color, which will fade gracefully.
Size it up
Size definitely matters. You want a beach towel that will provide comfortable lounging area from head to toe. Make sure your beach towel is longer and wider than you are, because accidentally dipping a suntan lotion basted leg into dry sand will leave you with a nice gritty coating.
You may want to consider a beach towel blanket or a beach towel for two. If you’re taking the kids or your honey, a beach towel blanket will give you plenty of room for you and all your beach gear. A beach towel for two works for this as well, but if you like to really sprawl out you may want one of these biggies for yourself. It’s also an easy way to get some personal space on a crowded beach.
It may seem like all this planning is a pain, but the truth is, it’s the glossed over details that can make for hassle on your vacation. It’s better to take a few minutes now than to spend the whole of your holiday wishing you’d bought something else.
