Beach Checklist

The condo is booked and the travel arrangements have been taken care of. You’ve got a suit that makes you feel good and the forecast looks beautiful. You may think that’s everything you need for the perfect beach vacation, but all that time away from work and in the sun can do funny things to us hardworking Americans. Believe it or not, it can bore us silly.

Lay the Groundwork

The first thing you need for a good time at the beach is a nice place to call you own. A beach towel is how beachgoers stake their claim in the sand. Consider splurging for a beach towel for two or a beach towel blanket even if it’s just for you. Having plenty of space on the beach will let you sprawl out and really relax and enjoy the scenery.

Audio-Visual

With iPods and mp3 players getting more and more affordable, prep a mix of your favorite summer or island beats to soothe your mind and get you in the summer spirit. Good music only enhances a good experience.

If you’re into gaming, make sure you pack your handheld system and plenty of batteries. But don’t get too caught up in the action and forget to turn over every once in a while.

Low Tech

Whether or not you’re an avid reader, there are literally millions of books and magazines out there. One of them is certain to keep you entertained while you’re on the beach. If you pick up a copy of your favorite author’s latest, be sure to stick with paperback. If you’re lounging on you’re beach towel, you’ll want to prop up your book with one hand, and hardbound books can get weighty.

If you’re not sure what to get, don’t hesitate to ask the clerk at a local bookstore for some engaging summer reading. They know their stuff.

Get off Your Beach Towel

Did you plan to lounge on your beach towel all day? You can do that in your backyard! You’re at the beach! Get out there and enjoy it!

Beach tennis is a classic favorite that is good fun if you’ve got a partner. You might be surprised how fun you can have just bopping around a beach ball. Pick one up—they’re cheap, light, and take up minimal space. The same goes for the tried and true Frisbee, whether you’re in or out of the water.

If you’re more adventurous, pack a set of goggles or a snorkel. And if you’re really serious about getting into the water, you may want to bring a kickboard or a wakeboard.

The Essentials

Slap on your sunglasses and pack plenty of sunscreen. As much fun as the sun makes a beach vacation, it can ruin it just as easily if you’re not careful. Now you’re ready. Get out there and hit the beach!
