Comforters, unlike bedspreads, only cover the top of the bed, or mattress, and extend partway down the side of the bed. Pillows are usually placed on top of a comforter as well.
Comforters can be made out of a variety of materials. Most comforters use a cotton blend and are filled with synthetic material (such as polyester), which gives them their thick shape. They come in all sorts of styles and patterns. Solid colors make decorating easier and more versatile than a pattern, while patterns (such as floral, oriental, or circular or square shapes) can add color and texture. Comforters come in different sizes, designed specifically for twin, full, queen, or king sized beds. Many manufacturers of comforters also design matching sheets, pillow shams, and bed skirts.
