Fashion doesn’t take a vacation. It shows up on adventure treks, in nightclubs, on the ski slopes, and it certainly has a presence on the beach. At first thought, the beach may seem like a difficult place for fashion to take root because there are, quite simply, smaller and fewer clothing articles there.
Beyond clothing
Thankfully though, fashion does not start and end with clothing. There are loads of designer beach towels and accessories to keep you looking smart, even when you’re wearing less.
High profile designers such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Aegean Apparel, Dan River, Kate Spade, Missoni, Calvin Klein, and Versace, just to name a few, all fully appreciate the world’s desire to showcase designer tastes on the beach. They can do this with designer bathing suits, sunglasses, and hats, of course, but nothing beats the beach towel in visibility.
Make a statement
Even from the surf, bathers can spot designer beach towels by recognizing the designer’s name or by identifying a characteristic style. At a place where you’re not dressed in much, your beach towel can speak volumes about your fashion sense, and fashion savvy people know that fashion choices offer a glimpse into a person’s taste and personality, not to mention their social status.
Know your territory
Some beaches are more fashion conscious than others. Main Beach in East Hampton, New York and Laguna Beach in California are filled with beachgoers laying out on Kate Spade, Versace, and Ralph Lauren beach towels, and understandably so. On surf beaches it’s a different story, with names like Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Billabong, O’Neill, Ocean Pacific, Reef, and Body Glove getting most of the attention.
Talk without speaking
In an environment where people can’t know what you do for a living or where you live, which say a lot about who you are, it’s only natural to want to communicate something about your social status. Fashionable beach wear and designer beach towels are the obvious choice to accomplish this. It’s definitely more efficient and less crass than handing out business cards or laminated tax forms.
Here to stay
Status symbols have been around for as long as society itself. Prized furs, elaborate beadwork, precious stones and metals, and body art have a history of identifying powerful or wealthy members of society. Symbolic dress and fashion are a part of the human condition, so it should be no surprise that designer beach towels and beach wear are such booming industries.
Looking our best makes us feel good about ourselves, which is particularly important when we’re out in the one public place where our bodies are on display. So if a designer beach towel or bathing suit is going to make that daunting prospect a little easier, it’s well worth it.
