How To Clean Foam Mattress Covers

Preventative maintenance

Select a mattress cover that suits your needs and lifestyle.  Understand the cleaning instructions for mattress covers before making your final selection.

Mattress covers are available in standard bedding sizes to fit all types of mattresses on the market.

Foam mattresses do not require special bedding. Thicker mattresses may require deep pocket mattress covers.

Memory foam mattress covers offer the opportunity to assess the technology before the purchase expense of a full memory foam mattress or merely convert an existing bed to a higher comfort level.

Before selecting this option, be sure your existing mattress provides even support, as memory foam mattress toppers cannot compensate for existing mattress wear.  Use thinner, flexible bedding and mattress covers to take full advantage of the memory foam's contouring properties.

Most important cleaning information

Manufacturer's products are routinely updated with new materials requiring specific care.  Before washing, read and follow manufacturer's instructions completely.

All other cleaning information consists of general guidelines.

Many mattress covers are machine washable, but some do require dry cleaning, vacuum cleaning, or spot cleaning only.

Mattress tops and covers may have removable layers.  Wash only the layers designated as washable.

Antimicrobial treatments vary.  If working with an allergy relief product, check cleaning instructions before machine washing and drying

For machine washable covers, use lowest wash temperature.

If machine drying is recommended, use lowest time and temperature settings to prolong the life of your cover.  Line drying is also an option for machine dryable items.

Foam products generally are not machine dryable.  Heat from machine dryers breaks down foam resiliency.

Most non-washable covers should be spot cleaned of any stains and allowed to air dry

Memory foam mattress pads may be aired regularly for freshness or to remove odors

How often should mattress covers be cleaned?

Regular cleaning will keep bedding fresh and inviting.

Mattress covers do not require cleaning any more frequently than bed sheets.

Fluffing, vacuuming or airing may adequately refresh mattress covers between cleanings

Clean mattress covers immediately after spills or staining, following illness, and more frequently in warmer weather for maximum wear and comfort.
