The term linens can refer to any of the following: sheets, blankets, pillow cases, wash cloths, towels, napkins, place mats, tablecloths or runners. Although the terms bed linens and table linens are often used, the items are not necessarily made out of linen. Articles made out of cotton and other synthetic fibers are often referred to as linens.
Linen itself is a material woven from the fibers of a flax plant. Linen has been used since the Middle Ages, proving its durability in hot temperatures, and through excessive handling and intense sunlight. Linen varies in quality and texture: it can be silk-like or thick and rough.
Many people prefer to keep extra linens on hand, especially towels, sheets, and blankets. Spare linens are often used by guests or while others are being washed.
