Mattress covers have been around about as long as mattresses. Since a high-quality mattress can be fairly expensive, it is wise to use a mattress cover to prevent wear and tear and ward off other mishaps.
They are designed to fit all standard mattress sizes, including cribs. They can be held firmly in place around the entire mattress by a zippered closure, or cover only the top and sides of the mattress, held in place by elastic corners.
Mattress covers can be made out of a wide variety of natural materials, including wool, cotton, silk or latex. They can also be made out of synthetic materials such as polyester, vinyl, or plastic. Many parents chose a mattress cover made out of latex or vinyl for small children, as they are waterproof and easy to clean if bed wetting occurs.
