Pillow shams are typically used on extra pillows on a bed (as opposed to the pillows you sleep on). They usually include a tailored or ruffled trim and match a comforter, duvet, or bedspread. While some are comprised solely of fabric, others include ornate decorations that include embroidery, beadwork, or tassels.
Pillow shams come in three different sizes. A standard size sham is used on standard or queen pillows and measures 20x36 inches. A king size sham fits a king pillow, measuring 20 x 36 inches. A third size fits a Euro pillow, which is square in shape rather than rectangular, measuring 26 x 26 inches.
The fabric of a pillow sham may be thicker than that of a pillow case. Shams can be made out of cotton, wool, polyester, or other synthetic fibers. They can contain an opening; usually a flap, kept out of view, or be secured around the pillow with a zipper or buttons.
