There are two main types of sheets used on a bed: a fitted and a flat sheet. The fitted sheet is the one you sleep on. It fits snugly around the mattress, staying in place by the elastic edges that conform to the mattress size. The flat sheet is then placed over the mattress, with excess material tucked under it. This is the sheet you place over your body.
Sheets are made to fit all standard sizes of beds, including twin, full, queen, and king sizes. Sheets can be made out of linen, cotton, silk, fleece, or a synthetic blend, such as polyester.
Bed sheets were traditionally white, and many still favor the clean look of a white sheet. Sheets also come in a large assortment of colors and patterns. Many bed sets include patterns that match comforters, pillow shams or bed skirts.
