Get rid of shower mildew

Your shower is a breeding ground for mildew. Mildew is a fungus that enjoys high moisture and temperatures. Soaps, oils and other bathroom products are a catalyst for this shower scum. By understanding how mildew is formed, we can do a better job of combating it.

To clean messy mildew in your shower, scrub with a combination of hot water and bleach. 20 - 25% bleach is usually efficient. Make sure to dry out the shower after you're finished eliminating the oils and residue that is left behind while showering.

Additionally, here are a few tips to prevent mildew build up in the first place.

  • Wash any soap, shampoo, or other products from the shower after use. These products are the source of mildew. A quick wash of the walls after you shower is a good way to minimize mildew growth.

  • Keep it dry. Make sure to keep the door, curtain or any windows open to dry the shower out and prevent breeding. Running the bathroom fan will help.

  • Turn down the heat. Of the water that is. As mentioned before, mildew enjoys high moisture temps. Turning down the temperature of the water while showering is an easy step to preventing its growth.
