How Many Ounces in a Shot?

Keeping tabs on alcohol consumption

While the most common measure of liquid volume encountered in bars and nightclubs everywhere is a single shot, the equivalent of 1 1/2 fluid ounces, other typical shot sizes include the double shot (3 ounces, or double the amount of a single) and the pony shot (a smaller 1 ounce serving for fine liqueurs and aged spirits). From this basic, simple measurement, however, a number of complicating factors arise, making it sometimes difficult for the health-conscious to know exactly how much alcohol comes in any standard drink. And for those entertaining in the home, the fine art of mixology requires more than sloshing ingredients in a glass; the perfect proportion of every flavor must be ideally balanced.

Cocktail calculations

For simple mixed drinks, such a as rum and coke or a gin and tonic, the formula remains fairly simple. Each cocktail comes with a single shot of liquor with non-alcoholic mixers and ice taking up the remaining volume of the drink, no matter how large the glass. While neighborhood bars and local establishments leave the pouring to the bartender, many hospitality corporations operate machinery in their bars to guarantee perfect accuracy with each pour. Ordering a double results in a shot (or shots) that total 3 ounces, while a cordial or aperitif would likely be served in a pony glass (1 ounce).

Comparing apples and oranges

To complicate matters, some cocktails contain more than one kind of alcohol. Certainly a Long Island Iced Tea, with as many six shots, constitutes a much heftier concentration of alcohol than a simple mixed drink, but other common drinks require more than one alcoholic ingredient, such as martinis, cosmopolitans, margaritas and daiquiris. Sold as individual portions, these drinks can all hold as many as three or four shots of liquor.

Some beers are bigger than others

For beer and wine, determining the amount of alcohol becomes more complicated. Typically, a glass of wine contains the same amount of alcohol as a single shot of hard liquor or a mixed drink, but a glass of wine in most cases is defined as a 5 ounce serving. Many wineglasses hold a much greater volume, as much as 12 ounces. Similarly, a 12 ounce beer contains the same amount of alcohol as a simple mixed cocktail, but many beers come in larger volumes, as do bottled and canned beers.
