The science behind abdominal exercise

Your abdomen is the core of your body.  Toned ab muscles are a high priority goal for many exercisers and fitness buffs, and for good reason.  Not only do six-pack abs look great- they also improve the health and fitness of your entire body.

The answer isn't quite what you may think.  Many people are under the assumption that the only way to gain rock hard abs is through spot training like sit-ups and crunches.  This isn't quite the case, and in fact, focusing solely on working your ab muscles will do you more harm than good.  You may wind up with an injury, and chances are you won't end up with nice abs.

 

The truth is, the most effective way to gain solid abs is with a combination of methods.  Eating right and fitting in some cardiovascular exercise a few times a week, along with sit-ups and crunches, is a much more effective way of getting results.

 

Human beings, whether male or female, tend to store any excess fat their bodies may have around the stomach area.  Fat cells are, in simple terms, cores of unused energy.  In order to get rid of the extra layer, you must shrink the fat cells. 

 

Spot training exercises and muscle toning techniques like crunches or ab rollers will help define the muscles that already exist, but in order to see them you'll need to work off some fat.  And the only way to do that is through cardio.

 

The road to health

Remember- the stronger your muscles are, the more efficiently they burn fat.  A basic cardio exercise routine and abdominal muscle toning will work together to create an efficient machine that will eventually lead to the abs you're looking for.

 

It's important to realize that there isn't a shortcut when it comes to ab workouts.  The abs are considered one of the more difficult areas of the body to tone.  The fact is that gaining ab muscles will take some time and commitment, and you shouldn't expect immediate results.
