Step Aerobics Equipment

What you need to do it right

Everyone loves a good cardiovascular workout that tones and strengthens your muscles as well as your body.  Step aerobics may just be the ideal workout for those who want a challenge but still want to have a great time.

Although the idea of step aerobics is pretty basic, the steps themselves don't have to be.  In fact, advanced step aerobics can get pretty tricky and require a lot of skill and coordination.

If you're getting into step aerobics, give yourself an edge right from the start by having the right equipment on hand.

The step

The aerobic step you purchase should be an elevated platform.  The height and angle of the platform will ideally be adjustable so that you can set it to various difficulty levels.  The top should have plenty of room to stand with both feet at a comfortable distance apart.  Particularly with steps like the V step, where the feet are placed further apart, it's important to have enough standing room.

Although you might be tempted to use a regular step stool or other piece of furniture for your step aerobics, invest in a step meant for the purpose if at all possible.  The adjustable height and angle will be invaluable as your skills advance.

The shoes

High quality shoes are essential for any aerobics activity, and step aerobics is no exception.  Choose sneakers with good tread, cushioning, and solid ankle support.  Your feet will thank you- and so will the rest of your body.

The music

If you're working out at home, it can be fun to experiment with different types of music while doing step aerobics.  Just keep in mind that since step aerobics has a lot in common with dancing, the speed and the beat of the music you choose is extremely important.

If you listen carefully next time you're at an aerobics class or watching an instructional video, you'll notice that most aerobics music has the same basic tempo.  That's because it is chosen specifically to mimic your heartbeat.  Ideally, the music you choose for your step aerobics should have a tempo close to this (which is around 140 beats per minute, for anyone who's counting).

A safe and effective workout

Doing step aerobics at home is a great way to keep in shape without the hassle of going to the gym or attending classes.  Making sure you have the right equipment will help prevent injury and ensure that the results you're working towards are what you get.

The equipment is half the battle when it comes to step aerobics.  Trust us- the skills will follow!
