The simplest pedometers are not as simple as you might think. By sensing your movements and keeping track of your steps, the units then take into account your personal average length of each step and calculate the distance you have traveled. This is great motivation for when you want to push yourself and increase your daily distance.
When you are ready to get a bit more serious in your exercise regimen, you may want to move up to a more advanced pedometer. Higher-end units have a number of features that can add to your workout: calorie counters to estimate how many calories you have burned in any given workout, speedometers to estimate your rate of speed, timers and/or stopwatches, clocks, and pulse monitors. With some or all of these extra features and the information they provide, you can have a more effective workout.
