Along with all the terms and definitions associated with yoga, there is also a variety of yoga accessories available. Like the terms associated with yoga, the use of yoga accessories can also be confusing. The following guide is meant to orient you with some of the most commonly used yoga accessories.
Common yoga accessories
Yoga mats – Yoga mats are one of the most common accessories and are used in a variety of ways. Yoga mats keep you from slipping and also provide padding for parts of the body that will come in contact with the ground. Some mats are made to be thicker and provide extra cushioning while others are simply to prevent you from sliding.
Yoga blocks and wedges - Yoga blocks are used to enhance your stretches when your body is not limber enough for a full stretch. A yoga block accommodates your flexibility level by helping you to modify your pose. Yoga wedges are also used to provide additional support in the same manner.
Yoga straps – Straps are a yoga accessory that are an essential aid in some yoga poses and for beginners. A strap can help you hold a pose longer by allowing you to hook a hand or foot with ease.
Bolsters and breathing pillows – These are used as a yoga accessory to facilitate meditation and breathing postures. While lying on your back, you place bolsters underneath your spine, which makes the breathing practice easier. This yoga accessory can also be placed under the knees to ease the lower back in relaxation poses.
Physio balls – This yoga accessory is basically a large air filled ball. During yoga, these balls are used to provide support for back bends and other poses. They are also often used in physical therapy and for other workouts.
Eyebags and neck pillows – Eyebags relive tension around the eyes and brow while neck pillows provide additional support around the neck and spine. Both of these yoga accessories can be used in breathing poses and can be essential for overall relaxation. Heated and cooled versions are also available.
Zafus and zabutons – These yoga accessories are used as meditation pillows. They provide cushioning while also enhancing your posture. A zafu is smaller and can also be placed on the larger zabuton.
