Glossary of Yoga terms

History

Yoga is a group of Hindi spiritual practices that were developed in ancient India, where it is still popular. Yoga as a way to enlightenment is a central part of Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Yoga has also been an important influence in other religions and spiritual practices around the world.

The four main types of yoga are considered to be Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Raja Yoga. However, there are number of other varieties that have developed over the years. Yoga, along with various associated yoga accessories, has become very popular in the West where the yoga postures are emphasized.

A wide variety of yoga accessories are available and include yoga mats, rolls, blocks, and bolsters as well as simple yoga rugs. Additional yoga accessories, yoga videos and DVDs, eye and neck pillows, and yoga mat cleaners, are a bit more recent but still handy.
