How to Rack Billiard Balls

The official rules for racking 8-ball and 9-ball

OK, so as a topic, how to rack billiard balls may seem to rank right up there for sheer entertainment value with how to shuffle a deck of cards or how to grip the chess pawn as you capture another pawn en passant. But few things will unmask you as a pool amateur as quickly as an improper racking (other than maybe dropping your cue or saying "I thought this was a water sport"). Yes, "improper racking" might sound like a bit of naughty British fun, but believe me, you don't want to go there.

How to rack eight ball

This is how serious people can be about properly racking billiard balls: there are actually World Standardized Rules for racking a game of 8-ball. If only global politics were as organized as the rules of international leisure sports.

If you've seen a billiards ball rack or triangle, you know that the balls are arranged in descending rows of 1, 2, 3, 4, and a bottom row of 5 balls. And now the details:

The 8-ball goes in the center of the rack. That means it's the center ball in the row of 3 balls.

The first ball (that's the ball with the 1 on it) must go in the apex position (that means the top of the triangle). The center of this ball should be placed directly over the pool table's foot spot before breaking.

The two corner balls in the row of 5 balls must be a stripe and a solid.

The remaining eleven balls are placed at random within the triangle.

Home games of 8-ball often dictate that billiard balls should be racked in the following fashion:

The outer balls in each row must alternate solid-stripe-solid-stripe-solid or vice versa. Alternatively, those with too much time on their hands will sometimes arrange the billiard balls in numeric order, top to bottom, left to right. Both of these home billiard ball racking methods are actually against the official rules.

How to rack nine ball

Nine ball is played using only the billiard balls marked 1 through 9. Surprising, I know. The billiard ball rack used for nine ball is shaped like a diamond or parallelogram rather than a triangle, resulting in descending rows of 1, 2, 3, 2, and 1 billiard balls.

When racking nine ball, the first ball is again placed at the apex of the billiard ball rack. The nine ball is placed in the center of the row of 3. The remaining balls can be placed randomly throughout the billiard ball rack.

Nine ball is a great game for obsessive compulsive people to rack, as arranging the billiard balls in numeric order (apart from the center 9-ball) in no way violates the rules.
