A beer tap is a small, portable tool used for extracting and pouring beer from a keg. Kegs are normally made for tavern use, and taverns have extensive systems for moving the beer from the keg to the bar. These usually include external pressure, most commonly a cylinder of carbon dioxide, which forces the beer down a long tube.
For private use, though, it would not be practical to have such an elaborate system. Portable keg taps are fairly simple items that allow you to pour the beer without hoses and cartridges. Portable taps use a hand pump, which pushes air into the keg, thus forcing the beer up and out of the spigot.
Most retailers that sell kegs will also supply the tap. A fully refundable deposit is usually the only thing required. For more info about keg taps, check out the following articles.
