Ping Pong

There are many games that take the basic idea of a sport and scale it down to bring it inside (air hockey, foosball, etc.), but none is quite as popular as ping pong. Also known as table tennis, ping pong is based upon tennis and uses wooden paddles in place of racquets and a light plastic ball instead of the standard rubber tennis ball.

The game was invented as a means of entertainment by rich Englishmen during the Victorian period (being a part of the aristocracy could get oh so dull). Soon, ping pong tournaments were being staged, and in 1902, the first table tennis world championship was won. In 1988 table tennis was introduced as an Olympic sport. These days, rules are set and enforced by the International Table Tennis Federation, and there are extensive tournaments held each year.

Ping pong can make a lively addition to any home game room. For more info about ping pong, click on these helpful articles.
