The first exterior shutters were believed to be used by the ancient Greeks and served the purely functional purpose of allowing light and ventilation control. The earliest shutters were though to be constructed of marble, but after spreading to the Mediterranean, wood become more commonly used in their design.
Multi-functional shutters, which allow for greater control though the use of movable louvers, were also developed. These exterior shutters shed rain, filter sunlight, and allow air to flow while also providing privacy and protection from flying debris. These shutters hinge to either side of the window and can be swung closed when necessary.
In addition, non-functional shutters have also found their place on the American home. These exterior shutters are often fashioned out of plastic or vinyl and are bolted directly to the building next to a window. While not functional, they can be an ideal way to dress up the outside of your home.
