
When some of the first garage door openers were developed, shortly following World War II, they were treated as a novel time-saving invention that made life a little easier. The next generation of garage door openers solved this problem of the openers interfering with nearby systems by requiring the owner to preset a unique digital code, but didn't do much for security. Now, contemporary versions of the garage door opener of safer and easier to use than ever before.
Over the years, different mechanical drives have also been developed for garage door openers. Newer systems allow for the door to be moved with very little force and the door can also be stopped in partially open positions.
