A patio door serves as the portal from the cozy indoor area of your home to the outdoor area you've likely spent time and money making into a lovely, liveable space. The patio door lets light into your home, and also lets you enjoy a view of the great outdoors. They're a nice way to welcome guests onto your deck or patio, too. Patio doors come in a wide range of styles, sizes and designs; some are more energy efficient than others.
Patio doors come in two primary styles: hinged and gliding, or sliding. Deciding which one to buy can be easy if you look around the room where you're installing the door. Is there furniture close by that might block a swinging door? When space is at a premium, consider a sliding door. If space is not the issue, a single or double hinged door can create a grand, elegant space.
Clear glass doors are probably the most common style of door, though it comes in a variety of designs and styles. For instance, glass can be etched, frosted, and paired in French doors. Newer designs feature blinds encased between two panes of clear glass. Consider your personal style before you buy.
Taking the plunge: buying a door
An energy efficient door is important, as are U-ratings. Lowe U-ratings are better and more energy efficient. Ask a store clerk for information on energy star rated doors, and consult rating guides and tables. You can also visit the National Fenestration Rating Council's Web site for more information.
Make sure the door you choose comes with a screen and hardware for assembling the door. If it doesn't make sure you buy these items separately.
