Windows in the past were made from multiple planes of glass that were held together with a sash, modern windows are made from a single plane of glass.
Contemporary windows can still be designed with a sash, but these are often purely decorative. This sash is attached between the multiple glass panes and is called a grille.Window frames and sashes can be made out of traditional wood, but also come in metal and vinyl. Metal is a less than ideal material to be used in your home's windows as it conducts heat.
