Fight cord indecency!
What are my choices?
There are a number of manufacturers that make electrical and chandelier cord covers that can be used throughout your home.
For living areas there are decorative electric cord covers that are made of such luxurious fabrics as linen, silk and velvet. There is a variety of cord covers in different colors and textures that you can use to either feature a cord or make it retreat into the background. Now one might ask why you would want to feature an electrical cord. The reason is that chandeliers and hanging lamps necessarily feature their cords.
Conduit covers are also available that run over baseboard molding or quarter round. Traditionally these are made from PVC or metal. To conceal these covers you will want to paint them so that they retreat into the background. Matching the paint is easy now that computerized matching systems can be used to analyze the color of your trim. Just remove a small piece of trim and take it to your local hardware store so that the color can be matched then mixed right on the spot.
How do I apply lamp cord covers?
Installing a fabric cord cover can in fact be difficult. The plug at the end can be a major stumbling point. Some electric cable or cord covers may need to be removed. But before doing what ostensibly means rewiring your lamp take a look at the following instructions,
1. Apply electrical tape over the plug. Wrap the tape from the beginning of the cord over the plug until reaching the prongs.
2. Place a pencil between the prongs and continue wrapping the tape around the prongs and the pencil. (Make sure you use either an unsharpened pencil or one with a well-used tip.)
3. Wrap the tape around the pencil about half way down the shaft.
4. The pencil can be used in much the same way you use a needle. It will allow you to easily thread the cord through the cover.
Quick and easy
A quick and easy way to create a handsome cord cover is as follows.
1. Purchase a good quality two-sided tape. Wrap the tape around the cord that you would like covered.
2. Prior to application, go to your favorite fabric store and purchase ribbon that matches the room in which the device will be placed.
3. Wrap the cord in the ribbon. The ribbon is held in place by the two-sided tape.
If you take your time and wrap the cord evenly you will have a very attractive and functional cord cover.
