Door Bell Wiring

The postman can't ring twice

Why won't it ring

The most likely part of a door bell to fail is, in fact, the button. Because they are exposed to the elements and the abuse they take from playful callers they tend to breakdown overtime. Another part of a door bell that may fail is the transformer.

The transformer reduces the voltage from the standard 110AC to low voltage DC current. These transformers can burnout over time. When they do, many homeowners unaware of their existence are in for a good deal of frustration. Doorbell chimes are the least likely part of your door bell to break.

Troubleshooting a broken button

So the doorbell doesn't work and you have to get it fixed. Where do you start' Since the button tends to go first you'll want to start there.

1. Unscrew the switch and pull it free from the wall.

2. You will see two small wires hooked with connectors to the back of the switch. Remove the wires from the switch.

3. The wires will look different than most other household electrical devices. This is because the usually only carry 16-24v. When you work on the button you do not have to turn off the breaker.

4. If the doorbell rings you know that the switch is defective. If it doesn't, you need to move on to the transformer.

Troubleshooting the transformer

Transformers tend to burnout for one reason: someone or something has held the button down for a long time. Kids love to do this and, unfortunately, they tend not to be too good and fixing the damage. Always remember when working with the transformer to turn off the electricity. Unlike the chime and the button, the full amount of household current runs into the transformer.

1. The first thing you need to do is locate the transformer. This sounds much easier than it is. Transformers are usually found in the top of a closet. Unfortunately, the closet that they are located in doesn't always seem to be the one closest to the chime or the button. Some detective work may be needed.

2. Once you have located the transformer, kill the power to it and remove it.

3. Take it to the hardware store and ask the attendant in the electrical department to help you find the replacement. Switches are inexpensive so purchase a new one while you are at it.

4. Once you are home replace the old transformer with the newer model.

If you need or would like to replace the chime, follow the steps listed for replacing the button.
