Door chimes are similar to door bells and include many of the same features. Both wireless and wired door chimes are available can be selected based on features desired. As opposed to door bells, which are typically powered at 10 volts, door chimes run at 16 volts. Older door chimes use a special electromagnet to produce the chime.

However, electronic door chimes are now available that use no magnets. Instead, a digitally recorded sound sequence is activated when the button is pushed. Many electronic door chimes have wireless control systems making them easier to use as well. Although electronic systems are becoming more and more popular, the simple and effective design of the conventional door chime has made it slow to phase out.
