Electrical Circuit Tester

Electrical circuit testers can be used to test a wide variety of electrical devices found throughout the home to see if they are operating correctly. They are also an important safety feature for those that will be doing their own wiring and can often prevent serious injury or death.

A continuity tester is another name for a type of electrical circuit testers. These work by checking the flow of power in electrical circuits between two points such as with a light switch. These testers often include an indicator light or display that will indicate if an electrical circuit is established.

Working with electricity

Working with electricity or replacing your own wiring can be a daunting task to many average home do-it-yourselfers. Working with electricity can be dangerous but an electrical tester will tell you if there it still power or not which, correspondingly, tells you if it is safe to work on or not. Always test outlets, wires, switches, and any other electrical component before you touch them. This is the best way to prevent injury through the use of an electrical circuit tester.

Here are some areas to test when doing any home wiring project:

Make sure to test an outlet to make sure the power is off before working on it. The best way to test an outlet is by using the two leads from the electrical circuit tester to test between the screws on each side. If the display doesn't indicate a circuit then the power is disconnected.

The grounding should also be tested on any outlet before it is worked on. By insuring that the grounding is still active, any power surges will be dissipated rather than causing damage to the connected electrical appliance.

The power should also be off to the switch. This can be checked by using the electrical tester between both terminals on the switch and between the copper ground leads on each terminal.

Bare wires should be checked to ensure that they are still holding power efficiently. Use the tester between the two leads as well as in between the ground wire and hot, then neutral wire.

Other types of electrical circuit testers can also be found that are made to go directly into an outlet. These testers indicate if there is any power to the outlet or not and should be used to guarantee that power is disconnected. Other, more advanced, models of circuit testers can also be found that provide more information on circuits.
