Your home's main electric panel is the central delivery and regulation system for your home's power. This panel routes smaller cables and wires throughout the home as well as being the incoming port for three electrical service wires. Smaller, sub-panels are located throughout the house as well.

The main panel contains, depending on the age of the home, levers, fuses, or circuit breakers. Older homes have fuses and levers while most contemporary homes built in the last 30 years use circuit breakers.
The circuit breakers, fuses, and levers inside the electric panel are used to disconnect your home's electrical circuits for the incoming power. These devices automatically shut down or “trip” when they detect an overload or short circuit.
