Electrical switches, although often taken for granted, have seen many improvements since first being used in homes. Remote control switches are now available on the market and provide for ease of use in many situations. There are many different types of electrical switches available, but the types of remote controls are primarily limited to two different versions. The type you'll use will depend on the specific needs you need to fill.
Handheld remotes
Handheld remotes typically operate by transmitting an infrared beam that will control your appliance. These remotes work just like television remote controls and can be used to turn on and off lights or other appliances, dim lights, or even control fans or window shades.
Centrally located remotes
These remote controlled electrical switches are also called wireless systems. They use a transmitter and receiver and a central base which many appliances can be connected to. After the appliance is connected, these systems use your home's existing wiring to provide control. Remote control electrical switches use a variety of transmitters and sensors to allow for the control of lights, stereos, TVs, or any other connected electrical appliance from one centrally located controller. These switches can also be customized to operate from various remotes or consoles located throughout the house.
Automating your home electrical switches
If you've decided to install remote controls for electrical switches throughout the house there are a few things to keep in mind as it can seem like a daunting task at the beginning. Before you decide on the switches you want, you'll want to decide if you are going to automate the entire room or just certain tasks that are done while in the room. There are a number of tasks that remote control electrical switches are ideal for and a number of functions that they can make easier in any room. Electrical switches operated by remote control are often used for lighting, appliances, drapes, fans, and security systems.
If only one electric switch in the room will be operated by remote control, a simple hand-held remote control can be used. For situations where more than one electrical switch will be operated remotely, a more complex system may be used in order to operate them all successfully.
As with most things, you get what you pay for when you purchase remote control electric switches. The more you spend, typically, the more features you will get while also allowing for increased complexity in your remote system.
