Carpet

Historians have traced the use of rudimentary carpets all the way back to 6000 B.C., but fortunately for us, modern carpet is quite streamlined. Here, we break down some basic carpet types by texture so that you can choose the best for your home.

Cut pile. The most popular variety, cut pile carpet features evenly cut tufts. Cut pile carpets come in a variety of thicknesses; think velvet or plush for posh settings or tightly twisted frieze for high-traffic areas.

Loop pile. Loop pile rugs feature looped tufts that resist crushing; while cut pile carpets often show footprints and vacuum marks, loop pile carpets do not. Within the loop pile family are cut and loop pile carpets made with both cut and looped tufts; level loop pile carpets made with exclusively looped tufts, such as berber; and multi-level loop pile carpets with tufts of varied heights.
