The carpet
No matter what your technique for cleaning cat urine will be, almost every method begins the same way: blot up as much of the cat urine as possible with a clean cloth or paper towel. Press down for 30 seconds. Remove the towel and repeat the process until the area is fully dried. Rinse with clean, cool water, and then blot the area dry again.
Now as for the odor, you can try a few things:
Baking soda is the classic method. After dampening the area with water, sprinkle baking soda over it. Rub the baking soda in and let dry. Brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.
Another great household helper is white vinegar. Mix together 1 quart warm water and 1/2 cup white vinegar, and dribble the mixture onto stain. Place towels over the area and put something heavy on top. After a few hours, remove the towels. Note: Test the vinegar solution on a piece of fabric that is hidden from view.
Upholstery
It may be possible to remove the cover of your couch or chair upholstery. If not, then observe the following procedures:
Dab stubborn stains with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. If solvents are needed, pour them onto a clean cloth, not onto the upholstery. Use a circular motion, working from the outside in. Dry immediately with a hand held hairdryer (cool setting).
Hardwood floors
Blot the wet area immediately with paper towels. Wash the area several times with white vinegar. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and blot dry with paper towels. Apply a specialized stain and odor-removing bacteria or enzyme cleaner (read the instructions carefully before using these products and test them in an invisible area.)
If you can not remove some old stains, try sanding the stain and resealing the wood.
Hopefully these suggestions will help you remove cat urine odors and stains from your carpet, upholstery or floors.
