Where do I start?
A great way to begin visualizing what kind of rug you want is to first create a substitute. You can outline the area with masking or some other type of less-sticky tape. Or to get a fuller idea, try cutting or folding an old sheet to the appropriate size. It is best to keep the rug as centered in the room as possible, keeping the same amount of uncovered floor space on all sides. Remember that symmetry is almost always more pleasing than an irregular special design.
Opposites attract
The color and pattern of your rugs will do a lot to determine the look of the room. Most interior decorators will suggest you use a rug that will contrast what you already have in your room. If the room is mostly neutral tones and spare design, try a rug that will introduce dark and warm colors. If, on the other hand, you have many dark colors and busy patterns, a lighter, more streamlined design may bring a sense of spaciousness.
Styles
If you want your rug to be the focal point of the room, use one that has a centralized design, or medallion; this will draw the eye to the artistry of the piece. If the center of rug will be covered by a table or another piece of furniture, or if you have another focal point in the room, such as a fireplace, go with a rug with an overall pattern. Of course, there are hundreds of different styles to choose from. The major categories are:
Oriental
Persian
Contemporary (a catch-all term for a multitude of varieties)
Braided (often dealing with traditional American Indian or Southwestern designs)
Colors
Whether you are going for something understated or dramatic, keep the colors in line with the rest of the room. Your rug should complement the colors and patterns already present. Take into consideration existing paints, wallpaper, fabrics, and the floor that will be partially covered. It is okay to concentrate on minor colors in, say, a Persian rug, as long as the dominant colors do not clash.
Sweating the small stuff
Many small areas, such as hallways and entranceways, are also high traffic areas. Therefore, it is important to find an appropriate rug for function as well as style. Dark colors and durable fabrics are best. Braided rugs often work well.
