Rugs

While we usually categorize rugs based on the rooms they are intended for - area rugs for the living room and plush, absorbent rugs for the bathroom - rugs are even more broadly categorized simply by production method: handmade or machine-made. And while you might not be surprised that tufted rugs are easily mass-produced, woven rugs (like the kind you might have in your kitchen) are as well. Woven rugs have a pile woven with their backing, whereas tufted rugs have a pile inserted into the backing by a needle.

Manufactured rugs, although not one-of-a-kind, are generally more affordably priced than handmade rugs.

Handmade rugs, however, can cost thousands of dollars, generally because they can take as much as or more than a year to produce'some weavers really do start the job from scratch, spinning a rug's yarn themselves.
