While candlelight may be the epitome of romance, it doesn't have to work double duty as the epitome of emergency lighting.
Battery-operated emergency lights can brighten the halls and exits of your home in times of power outage; many of these types of emergency lighting systems have built-in sensors and switch on when the power in your house goes out. Note, though, that emergency lights that work in conjunction with your home's main electrical system need to be professionally installed.
On the other hand, you can keep a variety of battery-operated, stand-alone (and often hand-held) light sources, such as flashlights, fluorescent lanterns, and light sticks, around as well.
Round out your emergency kit with a radio, first aid supplies, blankets and other protective coverings, spare batteries, non-perishable food, and bottled water.
