Don't confuse security lighting with landscape or decorative outdoor lighting; in order to prevent any suspicious activity and keep both your home and your family safe, you need light fixtures that directly, rather than diffusely, light areas that must be seen without creating stark shade.
Outdoor decorative lighting is relatively non-effective when used for security. Although attractive in daylight, it creates nighttime shadows.
One of the most important things to look for in a good security light is little or no glare - go for a well-hooded lamp or a floodlight.
Infrared sensor lights are also excellent security choices; when something or someone comes into the sensor's field, the light automatically turns on. Place these types of security lights under the eaves of your house or above your garage door, and, if you like, opt for one that sounds an alarm when the sensor field is entered.
