Track Lighting Terms

Some track lighting terms explained

Track lighting consists of a fixture that is connected to a track that is mounted, usually on a ceiling. The track serves two purposes: to hold the fixtures and to provide the electricity. Track lighting is versatile, stylish, and convenient. If you haven't had a lot of experience using this type of lighting, there's a few terms you should familiarize yourself with.

Flexible track lighting refers to a track that is bendable, rather than stationary. A flexible track allows the user to custom create their own design, rather than using a solid, straight strip of track.

Monorail lighting system is a term synonymous with flexible track lighting. A "monorail" refers to a bendable track.

Pendant track lighting refers to a branched fixture that hangs from the ceiling. Pendant lights are often ornate and decorative.

Low voltage lighting uses less than 30 volts of electricity (usually due to the effect of a transformer) making it more energy efficient. Low voltage track lighting utilizes small bulbs, allowing for more compact light sources.

Accent lighting is used to highlight a particular object, such as a work of art. Due to the flexibility and nature of track lighting, many track lights are used as a form of accent lighting.

Task lighting refers to lighting that is directed in a particular, confined area, providing illumination so one can complete a specific task (such as reading). Track lighting can easily produce this effect.

General lighting refers to a the uniformity of light in a particular space. While this is not the primary function of track lighting, it can still be used.

Halogen light is often used in track lighting because it contains a small filament, producing a light that is easy to control and focus. Halogen light is an effective source for providing accent and task lighting.

Fluorescent lights produce a relatively large and bright source. In track lighting, they are used as general lighting or to wash walls.

Wall washing refers to a lighting technique that produces an even, smooth level of light on a wall. Track lighting can be effective at producing this effect.

Transformers are electrical devices that transfer energy from one circuit to another. Since each light on a track system does not function separately, a transformer is needed to connect them together.

Dimmers are used to control the output of light emitted from a bulb.
