Wall sconces are, as their name indicates, small, wall-mounted light fixtures that stand as excellent sources of ambient or accent light. Usually home to small, low-wattage incandescent bulbs in sculpted shades that open at either the top or the bottom, wall sconces work well when used along with another major light source in a room.Sconces are often used in pairs'at either end of a mantelpiece, for example, but you could utilize a single sconce on a narrow entryway or hallway wall. Sconces are also sometimes sold in sets with matching overhead light sources; try these in a dining room.Mount your sconces just above eye-level; there, they won't detract your eye from a room's design or be wasted illuminating a ceiling and, at that height, you probably won't bump into them when passing through, either.
