Work Light FAQ's

We shed light on your questions

Q. Why should I use a portable work light? Won't a lamp work the same?

A. No, a lamp, or other conventional light source, will not be as effective as a portable work light. Work lights were designed to emit light into hard to reach places. Most of them are much brighter than a standard bulb you would find at home. And because these lights were meant to be moved around, they are much easier to handle and transport than a lamp.

Q. What type of light should I use in my work light?

A. It really depends on what kind of work you are doing. LED's and halogen lamps give a brighter, whiter light than incandescent bulbs. If you are doing detailed work, such as wiring, the brighter the better. Fluorescent lights work well too, although they do not emit a beam of light as narrow as that as LED's and halogens. Fluorescent lights work well in larger areas.

Q. Are all lamps as hot as incandescent lamps?

A. No. If you have used a standard bulb in a wire cage, you know how hot it can get! Luckily, improvements have been made in the past few years. Instead of using an incandescent bulb, try an LED. LED's are long-lasting and inexpensive. You can also try a fluorescent bulb, which uses a bit more energy than an LED, but lasts just as long and is just as effective.

Q. Is there such a thing as a combination work light?

A. Yes. A combination work light uses more than one light source. They are versatile, giving you flexibility. For example, you could try a fluorescent/halogen mix. The fluorescent lamp can be used for general lighting, while the halogen spotlight can be used for more focused lighting.

Q. What kinds of lighting accessories are available for my work light?

A. You're in luck! There are many, many to chose from. Some of the most popular include magnetic bases, which hold your light. Tripods, light hangers, and clamps can also make your whatever project you are working on run a little more smoothly. Make sure, of course, that you have a heavy duty extension cord as well.

Q. Where can I purchase work lights?

A. There are a number of hardwood stores and speciality stores that sell work lights. Some of the more reputable brands include Alert Stamping, Bayco Products, Ericson, General Manufacturing, Sears, and Woods Wire Products. Look for work lights on the internet as well.
